20 Days of Handmade: TwoFour Manufacturing

twofour manufacturingToday’s featured artist is TwoFour Manufacturing based out of Portland, Oregon. Woodworking is one of the few art techniques I have almost no experience with (my undergrad required a large number of intro classes to arts and crafts, and I’ve even done stained glass, paper making, and architectural drawing) so I’ve always admired people who do it well.

I am a fan of owls in general and especially Kenn’s forest guardian. I love small details like the bright green eyes within the distressed and dark wood of the body. Or the red flame on the all black body of his Goat Forest Shaman.

twofour manufacturingKenn also has a great blog post up at  TwoFour Manufacturing that shows the process he goes through in the making of one of his pieces. Creative people often get a lot of comments about the prices of our work without a lot of knowledge about the time that goes into creating our works. Add in the photographing, listing, packing, shipping, and marketing of ourselves and you start to realize there is no answer to the question “how long does it take you to make something?”.

TwoFour Manufacturing will be at the Handmade Holiday Pop Up Shop at Herbivore in Portland, Oregon, on December 18 from 4-8 pm, so stop by to check out his work and enjoy some homemade baked goods.

Mihl is kindly releasing this zine for no cost, so please head over to check it out. Her photography is gorgeous and I know this was put together with love and care over the past months. Enjoy!

20 Days of Handmade: Black Cat Soap Company

black cat soap companyI couldn’t do a month of handmade without mentioning my favorite soap maker,  The Black Cat Soap Company based in Portland, Oregon. I was lucky to find this company at the House of Dreams cat shelter’s annual holiday sale in 2013 and have been buying through her website ever since.

This year I visited the Black Cat Soap Company booth at the Mountain View middle school holiday fair and stocked up. I’m currently using the home for the holidays bar and highly recommend it. It has a great fruity scent without being overpowering and gives a great lather.

Black Cat Soap CompanyI also stocked up on two bars of the winter woods soap which I am looking forward to using. It has an evergreen scent that will be perfect for cold winter days and pretending I’m tramping through the woods on the Blue Ridge Parkway with my friend Carol the park ranger. If you are family reading this, there will be some surprise scents coming in your Christmas boxes later this month.

All of the Black Cat soaps are cold process soaps made in small batches, so if you see a bar you want, order fast. They do sell out and with new bars coming through the curing process you never know what will be listed next.

20 Days of Handmade: Mister Sister

mister sister Day three of 20 Days of Handmade brings up the amazing and delicious sweets of Mister Sister in New York City! They are your premiere source for vegan fudge and baked goods. Mister Sister is sold at a number of New York area shops but you can also buy through their etsy store, as well as some online vegan retailers such as Rabbit Food Grocery. You need more four packs of fudge in your life.

Mister Sister can often be found at the Vegan Shop Up at Pine Box Rock Shop in Brooklyn. Last time there they  had four packs of seasonal fudge that included peppermint and ginger. Get on that!

mister sisterNot in the mood for sweet, creamy, vegan fudge? Mister Sister also bakes chocolate chip cookies, raspberry bars, and more.

You can find a full list of their retail shops on their website, or stop by the vegan Shop Up to stock up.

Support Handmade: Tami Noyes of Vegan Appetite

Vegan Appetite is one of those blogs I read back in the day, when there were only about 10 vegan blogs floating around and it was an outright event when new posts went up. It wasn’t until some time later that I got to know the author, Tami Noyes, through forums and facebookeries. She is a delightful person and I’m pleased to have some of her cookbooks in my collection.

Vegan AppetitieHer first, American Vegan Kitchen, came out in 2010. It contains my favorite muffin recipe that I have ever made, the delicious Cinnacrunch Muffins. You should buy the book for this recipe alone, but wait! There’s more! You’ll also get a great burger bun recipe, the cheesecake pictured on the cover, the All American Incrdiburgers, and many more!

Tami Noyes has also published a few books co-authored with the amazing Ms. Celine Steen, among them Vegan Sandwiches Save the Day.

Vegan appetiteThe chickpea shawarma is a must and I loved the beet barley burgers. And you don’t have to make just sandwiches. There are recipes for various meats, spreads, and toppings that can be used however you like. I highly recommend the bierocks if you love you some rye bread and sauerkraut.

You can buy any of her cookbooks over at Herbivore and keep the small business love rolling. And check out Tami’s blog now for a preview of their upcoming Great Vegan Protein Book and a giveaway!

Vegan Thanksgiving Recipes and Plans

I am no recipe creator but I’ve been seeing friends post plenty of great vegan Thanksgiving recipes this year. I’m doing a little round up of delicious things you can make this week to share or to keep for leftovers all week.

vegan thanksgiving

First up is squash dressing. I’d never heard of this dish until Johnp blogged about it for vegan mofo a few years ago. Cornbread and summer squash mixed up together and baked. Pictured is his squash casserole, which uses that same ubiquitous squash with cracker crumbs. Choose your own casserole adventure!

I’m also a big fan of the Campbell’s soup recipe for green bean casserole. This one is super easy to veganize. Substitute soy milk for the dairy milk. The cream of mushroom soup can be subbed with the recipe from Cookin’ Crunk or by using a vegan boxed soup such as Imagine Portobello Mushroom (just thicken the packaged soup with some flour or cornstarch).

If you want to make your own roast, why not try out Isa Moskowitz’s seitan roast stuffed with shittakes and leeks? Or try out her cornbread stuffing with pecans and pears.

pumpkin cheesecake

For dessert, I’m eyeing this pumpkin cheesecake pie from Joni Marie Newman.  You can’t go wrong with pumpkin and cream cheese and this recipe looks very easy to make. Just remember to invite me over when it’s all done!

Work in Progress, Holiday Ornaments, Cat Stockings, Tea

work in progress

The holiday season is upon us and is hopefully my busy season. I am focusing on some work in progress for a show at Llewellyn Elementary this weekend, working on my new personalized cat stockings, and some special order ornaments today.  And drinking some tea which I see now is nearly empty.

star tree topperI am also starting to list some of my 2014 Christmas ornaments including my new pirate star. This little one has a red ribbon to hang on the tree and a fabric loop sewn on the back if you want to use it as a tree topper. I’ve been topping my tree with one of these for the past couple of years and it always proves popular.

My tea of choice this morning is lapsang souchong from Townshend’s Tea. Mug courtesy of Vida Vegan Con.

Buckeye Balls Now With Vegan Recipe

buckeye ballsBuckeye balls! Who doesn’t love them? Peanut butter and crispy cereal rolled up in chocolate. This is my favorite quick dessert to take someone. They are easy to make, don’t require a lot of ingredients and need no measuring.

I first learned of Buckeye balls from kittee’s great Papa Tofu zine and I use a mix of the recipes from there and Vegan Finger Foods. Today I’m going to share my magical recipe with you.

Buckeye Balls Panda Style

-Put some powdered sugar in a bowl, and add some crispy style cereal to it. Mix. Make sure there’s about twice as much crispy as there is sugar

-Add a dash of cinnamon and mix again.

-Plop in some peanut butter and mix it up until it’s a good consistency. Add more crispy cereal if it is too soft, add more peanut butter if you can’t incorporate the dry mixture.

-Roll into balls and freeze.

-Melt some chocolate and dip each frozen ball in and cover. Drop onto wax paper and freeze again. Don’t worry if they aren’t perfectly round and smooth like the picture people put on Pinterest. They will be more tasty if they are lumpen and uneven.

-Eat 5 with some tea in your garlic mustard mug.

applesauce bread recipeLook at that nice crumb! This is a pretty mildly flavored bread and I would add more cinnamon and nutmeg next time. Great texture and it held up well for a few days. I’m pleased that my first attempt at a recipe from this book turned out well. If you make this, let me know how it turns out!

Food That Looks Like My Cat: Applesauce Bread

A friend recently sent me a great old spiral bound cookbook from the Sandwich Community Hospital in Sandwich, Illinois titled Ladies Auxiliary Favorite Recipes.

Ladies Auxiliary Cookbook    I remember this type of cookbook well from my youth. A group would gather recipes from the community and send them off to be spiral bound as a fundraiser for the VFW ladies auxiliary or the volunteer fire department. Each person would get credit on their recipe and if you bought the cookbook you would know most of the people inside. And had likely tried a few dishes as well.

vegan applesauce bread

I’ve decided to veganize some of the recipes from this cookbook to see how they turn out, starting with Mrs. J. Leonard’s applesauce bread. I’ll have a recipe and review posted here tomorrow. After the loaf came out of the oven, smelling quite autumnal, I noticed that it bore a resemblance to a certain ginger cat.
